Entertaining Tips

Hors d’oeuvres, small one- or two-bite snacks, are typically served before (hors) a meal (d’oeuvre). More and more frequently, hosts choose to forego a large formal meal and increase the variety and quantity of hors d’oeuvres. Here are a few things to consider when planning your event.

For a two-hour party, plan on 10 - 12 bites per person per hour (although teenagers generally eat more);

If there is no dinner, allow 20 bites per person, with at least four different appetizers.

For 25 guests offer five or six different appetizers. For 25-50 guests offer nine or ten different appetizers. Over 50, plan on ten or more different appetizers.

Formal occasions demand a butler carrying trays of hors d’oeuvres. For more casual events, buffet-style is perfectly acceptable, for the hockey playoffs, the more snacks the better and close to the tv is the only location.

Before planning your menu make sure your guests don’t have any dietary restrictions.

For variety, combine hot Ocean Pier savoury appetizers with a fruit plate or crudités and dip.

Plenty of napkins and toothpicks will be appreciated by all.
